Eight people caught in kitchen fire in West Mackay

An early-evening kitchen fire on a suburban street saw firies descend and more than half a dozen people assessed for injuries.

Eight people have been caught up in an early-evening fire at a West Mackay property, after their kitchen caught on fire.

Three firefighting crews were called to a structure fire at a property on Perry St, at the corner of Longair St and Field St past 6pm last night.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said two firefighters in breathing apparatus went inside the building as soon as they arrived on scene and were able to account for everyone in the house.

The spokeswoman said smoke was still coming out of the building when firies arrived, but flames had already been put out.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said eight patients had been assessed at the scene, with one male in his 50s who sustained burns to his hands.

He was taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

The QFES spokeswoman said crews had also done atmospheric monitoring, which presented normal levels.

No special firefighter investigator has been requested for the case.
