Major step to bring damaged enclosure back to former glory

WILSON Beach residents may soon be able to cool off safely in the ocean as the next big step on their swimming enclosure progresses.
Tenders for the refurbishment and extension of the Wilson Beach swimming enclosure opened this week after years of waiting.
The enclosure has been a contentious issue since it was severely damaged in Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
The enclosure was not eligible for NDRRA financial funding and has sat damaged in the years since.
Approvals for the construction were granted to the council earlier this year with an operational works permit issued on February 6 and a building permit issued on April 30.
A cash splash of $350,000 for the enclosure was also included in this year's council budget.
At the time, Division 3 councillor John Collins said he had fought hard for the project that had "been a long time coming".

Residents also recently raised concerns about the debris coming from the nets, saying it posed a threat to marine wildlife.
Tenders will remain open until December 23 before being assessed by the council and awarded.
