A popular lake boasting metre-long barramundi is receiving a major camping ground upgrade.
Now the Whitsunday Regional Council will build cabins, BBQs, fire pits, managers quarters and a playground.
A development application states the current 120 unpowered camp sites will be increased to nearly 200.
Sixty-four will remain as unpowered tent sites and there will be 94 unpowered caravan and RV sites, 30 powered camping sites and 10 safari tents to bring the total up to 198.
In addition, documents state two communal BBQ and fire pit areas covered by skillion roof shelters and two amenities buildings will support visitors.
A playground and recreational water sports concession area will entertain tourists and locals alike.
The upgrade follows the news that Red Cat Adventures is expanding inland in managing the camping ground.
In a media release from Whitsunday council, Red Cat Adventures director Julie Telford said Ilze and Mark Huston would be the new caretakers of “a slice of paradise”.
“(We) are excited to announce that we aim to be offering ‘glamping’ tents (and) low-impact water sports,” Ms Telford said.
“We will also use our extensive experience and knowledge of the tourism industry to raise the profile of Proserpine.
“Which will have a flow-on benefit to the town’s local businesses.”
Glamping, or glamorous camping, has become more popular in the region.
One new business, Bell Tents Whitsundays, has taken advantage of that popularity and set up on the banks of Lake Proserpine.
Bell Tents’ website describes Lake Proserpine as a “hidden gem” of the Whitsundays.
