The Whitsundays have crowned a Bowen salon as the region’s best hair colourist — but it wasn’t the first time they’ve beat out the competition.
Jayde Loree Hair Studio are the 2024 winners, but faced some backlash after being voted the best hairdresser in 2023, with critics claiming it was only campaigning for votes that got them over the line.
But owner Jayde Loree Rogers said the new title proved her salon had won fair and square.
“It’s definitely a good feeling, I’m quite proud of where we are,” she said.
“When people started saying nasty stuff, it kinda took the limelight.”
She said people thought she had nominated myself and was asking for votes by posting about the competition, and so she didn’t campaign for herself on this round.
“(The win) just confirmed we are the best,” she said.
“I just think it speaks for itself now, doesn’t it.”
Jayde Loree Hair Studio has grown far beyond its origins as a home salon, with a two seniors and two apprentices, as well as expanding into massage and injectables.
Ms Rogers said they also ran events for charity, including Shave for a Cure, and did regular raffles offering $400 worth of services.
She said she was pleased her salon had distinguished their work from the 12 other hair salons in the small town of Bowen.
Yet she also said she hoped that as “salons in this community, because we are so small, to just have each others backs”.
“We just want everyone to have good hair,” Ms Rogers said.
“We just create magic and try to keep our prices reasonable so everybody can be pampered.”
