In the hope of spreading Christmas cheer around Bowen after a tough year, the Bowen Christmas Lights competition will help encourage residents and businesses to get in the festive spirit.

The Bowen Chamber of Commerce is arranging the competition this year with Woolworths being the major sponsor, and there are plenty of great prizes on offer.

Nominations will be open until Tuesday, December 15, and judging will take place on Wednesday, December 16.

Chamber of Commerce chairman Bruce Hedditch said the lights competition was a good community event.

“The confidence of the business community has been badly damaged because of COVID,” he said.

“It gives them something to think about and maybe put their own nominations in.”

Nomination forms can be picked up and submitted at Woolworths in Bowen, located at Centre Point Plaza.

There are multiple prizes on offer including a Woolworths ham or turkey for the best decorated house, two Lions Christmas cakes for the best decorated retiree house, sign blade with year sticker from the council for best street, homemade Christmas pudding from Cassandra Fashions for best decorated tree and a Christmas lighting package from Bi-Rite for the best decorated house on a small budget.

The Bowen Chamber of Commerce is also giving $250 to the business with the best Christmas display.

Mr Hedditch said any business could be involved, not just those in the CBD.

As in previous years, residents from Murroona Gardens and Cunningham Villas will tour around the entered properties on Wednesday to vote on the winners.
