Whale rescuers have freed a whale calf caught in shark nets off the Gold Coast.

In the latest of a spate of whale strandings off Queensland and northern NSW this humpback migration season, the animal became snared in nets off Currumbin on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s distressing to watch,” one Currumbin Beach local told The Courier-Mail.

“It looks like a calf with its mum. There are three boats out there trying to rescue it.

“The poor thing came up for air draped in the bloody useless nets.”

The calf was freed around 3pm.
