South East Queensland esidents have been hit by slow-moving thunderstorms that have delivered 100mm of rain in just an hour.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Somerset, South Burnett, Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley.

Residents are warned to prepare for damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

Severe storms have been detected south of Kingaroy and are expected to hit Kingaroy, Hatton Vale and Nanango by 7:25pm tonight.

Bromfleet recorded 82mm one hour and Benobble recorded 48mm in 30 minutes earlier this afternoon.

The weather bureau said 100mm of rainfall was recorded in the hour to 4.45pm at Bromfleet Alert.

It comes as South East Queensland looks forward to a wet weekend, as rain and storms south of the border at the Granite Belt could expand further north.

The southeast’s chance of rain will jump from 50 per cent on Thursday and Friday to peak at 70 to 80 per cent on the weekend.

The showers at the tail end of the week are expected to produce 5-15mm of rain, with the possibility of some areas reaching 30mm should a thunderstorm hit.

“It’s not going to be a rain band that blankets everything in the same amount of rain, it’s going to be kind of patchy,” weather bureau meteorologist Helen Kirkup said.

Closer to the border, the Darling Downs had “really risk days” from Thursday with decent storms expected which could result in localised intense rainfall with the potential for small-scale flash flooding.

The wet weather can be expected to carry over into next week.
