Weather: Apparent temperature of -5.7C as southern Qld shivers through cold snap

It’s been another seriously cold start across southern Queensland, with apparent temperatures dropping as low as -5.7C in parts of the state.

It’s another seriously cold start to the day in southern Queensland, with temperatures as low as -3C and feels-like temperatures dropping more than 2C lower.

A 5.50am the mercury plunged to -2.8C at Applethorpe on the Granite Belt, but with an apparent temperature of -5.3C. Temperatures have since plunged even lower, sitting at 3.1C at 6.50am.

It comes after the tiny town reached a maximum temperature of 12C at lunchtime on Tuesday.

It felt even colder at Oakey, with an actual temperature of -1.7C, but an apparent temperature of -5.7C.

Low temperatures were widespread, with apparent early temperatures of -3C in Chinchilla, -3.1C at Goondiwindi and -3C at Wellcamp Airport.

It felt like a chilly 3.1C at Brisbane Airport at 5.40am, with the actual temperature falling to just 7.9C.

The temperature at Archerfield in Brisbane’s southwest was 4.8, but felt like 1.8C and at Canungra in the Gold Coast hinterland it felt like -2.3C.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the chilly starts will continue for the rest of the week before a turnaround next, when above-average daytime temperatures are expected.

“We’re looking at very warm daytime maximums across most of the state, way above average and feeling very unlike winter, up to 4-9C above average later this weekend and into early next week,” the Bureau’s senior meteorologist Felim Hannifey told The Courier-Mail on Tuesday.
