Southeast Queensland will get a reprieve from heavy rainfall today, but forecasters are warning of a wet weekend with falls up to 80mm.
With a chance of showers forecast today, Bureau of Meteorology’s Rosa Hoff said the region was experiencing a lull in rainfall while a weather system moved off the coast.
“We’re in a bit of a lull at the moment just as the system that brought the heavier rainfall earlier in the week has moved off the coast, however we’re going to see a coastal trough redevelop and it’s going to be a different system to what we saw last week,” she said.
“It’s not the same kind of rain; it’s most likely to fall overnight and early morning.”
The coastal trough will bring falls up to 80mm across the weekend on the Gold Coast, and with a 90 per cent chance of rain the Sunshine Coast could see falls up to 70mm over the two days.
A swell over 2.5m is expected over the weekend on the southeast coast.
“We still do have a chance of showers about the place (today) but much lighter amounts than we’ve seen over the last week or so,” Ms Hoff said.
“Generally around Brisbane we’re expecting less than 10mm today but then a coastal trough so going to reinvigorate for the southeast coastal fringe over the weekend, we’re back to having a chance of 20mm on the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.”
There is a high chance of up to 25mm of rain in Brisbane on Saturday, as well as a chance of a thunderstorm.
Temperatures will drop to a maximum of 26C on Sunday as the damp conditions settle in for a week of showers.
The weather bureau warned of a chance of storms on Friday in the state’s northern and southern interiors, with the chance of large hail in the south.
