South East Queensland is set to swelter over the King’s Birthday long weekend with four consecutive days over 30C, with a high fire risk for parts of the state.

A trough moving through western parts of the state will bring warm and dry weather over the long weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Dan Hayes said South East Queensland will see temperatures well into the mid-30s over the long weekend.

“The long weekend in general, should be quite a bit warmer,” Mr Hayes said.

“With that trough coming in over the weekend, some of that warm air will make its way down into central and southern parts, and we’ll see those temperatures start to really push up.

“We are expecting to go from around about 25C at Ipswich today, up to 36C by Sunday, so 11 degrees warmer over the course of a few days, and that’s going to be a similar pattern through large parts of the south east.

“We’ll see similar sort of rises in the temperatures around places like the Darling Downs and Granite Belt and other inland parts, it will be less pronounced the closer you are to the coast, but it will still be warm.”

Mr Hayes added that as the trough moves through inland parts of the state, it will have the effect of raising fire danger ratings, including in the Channel Country with an extreme fire danger rating, that will likely see a fire weather warning issued for the region today.

“We do see the fire danger rating go up to extreme for that area,” he said.

“There will be a fire weather warning out for the Channel Country, and we see that high fire danger rating extending even into the Darling Downs and the Granite Belt on Saturday as well.”
