Hit and run crash on major Brisbane motorway

A woman is lucky to be alive after her car was rammed from behind at high speed on Brisbane’s Gateway Motorway in an incident caught on camera.

Dramatic dashcam footage shows a blue Holden Commodore speeding towards Capalaba woman Maretta Vincart’s Mazda 3 at Murarrie around lunchtime on Monday.

The car smashes into the back of her vehicle, forcing it to spin 180 degrees, before continuing to drive south after the crash, without stopping.

Ms Vincart can be heard screaming ‘oh my God’ as her car spins and hits a guard rail.

A black SUV moves to pull in behind her before taking off after the initial driver. Soon after another vehicle does stop, with the driver emerging to offer help.

She said the driver of the car that gave chase had provided a report to police.

Ms Vincart then says ‘yeah I’ll just get out of the car,’ before saying ‘holy s–t.’

Ms Vincart told The Courier-Mail the hit and run crash happened at speed and that she thought it was “intentional”.

“I was just travelling over the Gateway Bridge, heading southbound, coming back from a work appointment, and I was in the third lane,” she said.

“I could see a car speeding up behind me, the assumption is that they’re going to overtake and change lanes, and then they hit me.

“I was impacted and I hit the guardrail and bounced off that and then pulled over to the side.”

Ms Vincart said she can’t remember the screaming that can be heard on the footage.

“It was a big shock, as I looked in the rearview mirror again, that’s when he was hitting me,” she said.

“I don’t even remember screaming at all, they always say things like that happen in slow motion, and that’s exactly what was happening.”

Ms Vincart reported the incident to police and her insurance provider, and now faces having to pay excess on her policy.

“I’ve put a claim in but because I don’t have the details of the driver, I’m going to be charged an excess, which is really frustrating,” she claimed.

“Potentially, my car has been written off, so it’ll financially impact me, and I wasn’t doing anything wrong. It’s not an ideal situation.”

A search for the number plate for the blue sedan involved in the crash on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website was unable to find the registration of the vehicle.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any relevant dashcam footage is urged to contact the Queensland Police Service.
