More severe storms have hit South East Queensland after seven people were killed in a tragic 48 hours of wild weather.

Severe storms have again lashed parts of South East Queensland this evening.

It comes after ferocious storms killed seven people, and caused widespread destruction across South East Queensland over the past 48 hours.

The latest warning was issued about 6.30pm for parts of the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast council areas.

“A severe thunderstorm likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones was detected near the area south of Canungra,” BOM said in a statement.

“This thunderstorm is moving towards the east. It is forecast to affect Springbrook and Numinbah Valley by 6:40 pm and Little Nerang Dam by 6:55 pm.”

This warning, and a more general severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Southeast Coast district, was cancelled just before 7pm.

Earlier the Bureau of Meteorology said severe thunderstorms were possible for almost the entire east coast of Queensland, south of Port Douglas.

Senior meteorologist Daniel Hayes said a low pressure system in New South Wales was expected to move offshore which would push an upper level trough into South East Queensland area.

He said that would enhance any storms expected to hit today and possibly create a long stretch of severe thunderstorms from the Northern Rivers in NSW north to Cairns.

Damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rainfall can be expected along the Queensland coast.

“There is a chance that we may not see any activity through the southeast today so that will be a bit of a watch and see throughout the course of the day,” Mr Hayes said.

Storm activity is expected to ease from tomorrow before returning on Saturday after two days of hot and humid conditions, with Brisbane forecast to get to 36C on Thursday.

“There will be another upper level system potentially coming through over the weekend so we could be going back into the possibility of showers and possible thunderstorms which may be severe once again,” Mr Hayes said.
