Queensland weather: Temperatures plummet again ahead of predictions of four-day deluge

Queensland is shivering with temperatures plummeting 9C this morning ahead of an expected deluge, with predictions of up to 150mm over four days.

Minimum temperatures were as much as 9C colder on Tuesday than they were on Monday thanks to a southerly winter blast sweeping the region.

Brooke Pagel from the Bureau of Meteorology said that a “dry, southern airflow” that was pushed into the state overnight is to blame for the chilly start to the day.

“It is noticeably cooler this morning, particularly out in that Toowoomba and Darling Downs region and down to the border,” she said.

The coldest place in the state was Applethorpe, which recorded a low temperature on Tuesday of -2.2C at 6am – a significant 9C drop from yesterday’s minimum of 7C.

But the apparent temperature in Applethorpe felt even colder at -4.7C.

Further north, Toowoomba recorded a minimum of 3.4C with an apparent temperature of -0.8C.

Closer to the coast, Brisbane dropped to 10.6C in the city and is expected to climb, along with the entire southeast coastal region, to a top of 21C.

The chilly temperatures won’t stick around though – Ms Pagel said that wet weather expected later in the week would bring warmer conditions.

“That will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and even though they mostly won’t be heavy falls, they’ll provide that cloud cover so those minimum temperatures will stay a bit warmer than we’ve seen recently.”

Some isolated falls are expected in the Brisbane area but the heaviest falls will be in the Wide Bay region.

Friday is shaping up to be the wettest day – between 20mm and 45mm has been forecast for Hervey Bay and 30mm for Brisbane.

But amateur weather forecasters say the falls could be much heavier, with 150mm totals possible, if a low of the Queensland coast forms near the state’s southeast.
