Queensland weather: Heatwave conditions for state’s south as monsoon impacts far north

Southern Queensland will swelter this week with 42C temperatures amid an intense heatwave, as the state’s far north battles monsoonal rain.

Southern Queensland is in for one final blast of summer with 42C temperatures driven by a low intensity heatwave this week.

It could get as high as 33C in Brisbane on Wednesday, 39C in Roma on Thursday, and 42C in Birdsville on Tuesday.

As southern parts of the state swelter, the far north is on flood watch amid a monsoonal drenching, with 219mm of rain falling at Stewart Creek Valley, north of Port Douglas, on Saturday night.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said the heatwave should start to impact southwest Queensland early this week before moving east.

“We can expect to see a low-intensity heatwave reach some parts of the state with most of the conditions experienced off the coast and to the west,” the spokeswoman said.

“The heatwave will peak around Wednesday or Thursday with cooler conditions expected for Friday.

“The minimum temperature for each day will not provide much relief as no cool flash of air is expected for much of the week – hot nights are ahead.”

In Far North Queensland, an active monsoon is persisting with heavy rain and flooding impacting the Peninsula, Gulf Country and coastal areas north of Cairns.

Flood warnings have been issued around Tully, Daintree Village and Mulgrave-Russell.

Monsoonal conditions are expected for next week.
