Qld weather: Temperatures drop below 0 across the state

A Queensland town has come close to recording its coldest ever day, as temperatures dip below zero across the state.

Bureau of Meteorology predicts Australia to have ‘warmer’ winter

After some unseasonably mild weather, winter has officially arrived.

Several locations across Queensland dropped below zero early on Friday morning, with the apparent temperature even lower still.

The coldest place was Oakey, northwest of Toowoomba, where the official temperature at 6:10am was -4C but it felt like a freezing -8.3C.

Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said the temperature in Oakey was only 1.7C off its lowest ever recorded temp of -5.7C.

In comparison, Toowoomba itself was a rather balmy 3.7C, but the apparent temperature was 0.4C.

Applethorpe, in the Southern Downs, dropped to -3.5C at 5am but felt like -6C.

While Warwick, in the southern Darling Downs, shivered awake at -3.3C with an apparent temperature of -5.8C.

It was also a cold start in the northwest of the state, with Mount Isa dropping to 2.8C with an apparent temperature of just 0.4C, while in Urandangi at 6:10am it was 2.1C but felt like -1.6C.

In the South East, Brisbane dropped to its lowest temperature so far this year, recording just 7.3C.

Mr Narramore predicted temperatures in July and August would fall below that recorded during May’s cold snap.

“These cold frosty mornings will continue through the weekend with Brisbane staying between 8C and 9C most mornings and temperatures below zero in the Darling Downs and for the Granite Belt,” he said.

“If you’re hoping for rain you won’t see it but if you’re looking for beautiful sunny days there will be plenty of that,” he said.

Mr Narramore said the cool temperatures were due to cold fronts moving up from South Australia and Tasmania into NSW and Queensland.

“Morning temperatures across SEQ are about 2C to 6C below average and daytime temperatures are around 1C to 2C above average this week,” he said.
