In South East Queensland, maximums will remain in the low 30s until Thursday and Friday when the bureau said tops of 26C were expected as a cool, dry and gusty south-westerly airflow crosses two thirds of the state.

Temperatures will climb back to 32C by Sunday, however weekend outdoor activities may have to wrap up by afternoon as there is a high possibility of showers later in the day.

A trough combined with tropical moist air produced severe thunderstorms in western and southwestern parts of Queensland on Sunday night and another trough may be on the way.

The Peninsula district at the top of the state is battling a heatwave warning, with temperatures in the mid to high 30s only dropping to the mid 20s overnight through until at least the weekend.
