Qld weather: South East drenched by falls of more than 150mm overnight

South East Queensland has been hit with significant rainfall overnight, with some places recording up to 155mm, leading to flash flooding that has closed roads and led to three dogs being swept away, with one unaccounted for.

South East Queensland has been hit with significant rainfall overnight with parts recording up to 155mm, with flash flooding affecting the Gold Coast.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Felim Hanniffy said the heaviest rainfall was around the Gold Coast and Brisbane. He said Brisbane hit between 50 to 80mm while the Gold Coast got past 100mm and up to 155mm.

Gold Coast Police and Emergency services were called after reports of three dogs being swept away at Weedons Crossing Bridge in Nerang at about 8am.

Emergency services were able to retrieve two dogs, however, they have not been able to find the third — a black labrador retriever.

The owner has been reunited with two of the dogs.

A Gold Coast City Council spokesperson said minor flash flooding was occurring at Loders Creek in Southport at 7am on Tuesday.

They said they would be monitoring the situation closely.

“Road closures are likely this morning and motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution,’ they said.

“If it’s flooded, forget it.”

The spokesperson said, as the rain was expected to clear, they did not have any sandbagging stations open.

Lanes on the Pacific Motorway at Helensvale were affected by the flooding and residents were urged to proceed with caution.

“We’ve seen the worst of the rainfall. The heaviest of the rain has already started easing and the rain around Brisbane will go further down south,” Mr Hanniffy said.

“The rainfall will tend to get a bit more fragmented and showery, then really the next few days will be a contrast with dry and sunny conditions.”

Mr Hanniffy said the wild weather was caused by a trough with a mid-low-pressure system.
