Parts of Queensland are waking to a chilly start, with the mercury sitting below 0C in some parts of the state and barely making it into double digits in others.

The Darling Downs and Granite Belt were the coldest parts of the state just after 5am this morning.

It was -0.7C at Applethorpe near the border, but felt three degrees colder, while at Oakey it was 1.1C, but felt like -3.6C.

At Wellcamp, the mercury climbed just above 0C to 0.3C, but it felt like -3.1C.

Feels like temperatures around the South East dropped to 3.1 at the Brisbane airport, 5.3 at Archerfield, 1.3 at Amberley and -.1 at Canungra.

Earlier it felt like 1.3C at Sunshine Coast airport and 7.5C at the Gold Coast Seaway.

Meteorologist Olivio Regano said “cooler than average” temperatures were forecast state-wide until Wednesday.

It comes as parts of the Granite Belt and Maranoa through Roma woke up to subzero temperatures.

“From Thursday onwards we start to see a band of rain developing right in the southwest corner, it will start crossing Queensland on Friday and probably reach the southeast coast on Saturday,” Mr Regano said.

He said the forecast is “typical August weather” with “blue skies but crisp nights”.

“The wind is coming from the southwest which is always drier and colder at this time of year than a wind coming from anywhere else.”
