More wet weather for the South East while flood warning issued for another part of the Sunshine State

Queenslanders can expect more wet weather in the state’s southeast this weekend, but the biggest totals are expected elsewhere, bringing the threat of moderate flooding.

Risk of flash flooding heightened due to wet ground

Queenslanders can expect more wet weather in the southeast this weekend, while the threat of moderate flooding looms for the state’s west.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a flood warning summary at 10.40am on Thursday, alerting locals in a number of areas.

Minor flood warnings have been released for the Bakhara and Bulloo rivers, while an initial flood watch for Southern Inland Queensland catchments has also been issued, with the possibility they will increase to moderate levels over coming days.

Initial minor flood warnings are also in place for the Barcoo, Macintyre and Paroo rivers.

Severe thunderstorms are a possibility for Queenslanders in the Southwest both today and tomorrow, while rainfall is expected to increase from Friday in that region according to the Bureau.

Brooke Pagel from the Bureau said moderate flooding is possible this weekend for inland Queensland, as a trough moves across the state.

“We do have a flood watch issued for southern inland catchments because we are expecting that reinvigoration of that rainfall,” Ms Pagel said.

“Moderate flooding is possible over the weekend for some catchments as well which is why we released that flood watch.

“Those river rises are likely later this on this week. Something we’re keeping an eye on just depending on what this tough system decides to do, where it decides to move.

“Judging by the signal with this next rainfall event, we are looking at similar conditions but it is more contracting down so New South Wales seems to be getting the most of this reinvigoration.

“While the tip of the trough is going to move across Southern inland Queensland, which is why I’ve got that watch on.”

South East Queensland is also set for more rainy days ahead, with Ms Pagel saying that storms are forecast for Sunday.

The Bureau’s Brisbane forecast says that there is a 60 per cent chance of rain on Saturday, before that rises to a 90 per cent chance on Sunday.

Showers are expected in the afternoon or evening on Sunday, while Brisbane residents can expect a low of 16 degrees and 19 degrees across the weekend.

The Gold Coast is also expected to have some showers through to early next week, before conditions clear on Tuesday.

As for the Sunshine Coast, there appears to be a high likelihood of rain that region as well, with up to 10mm expected on Sunday.

“Showers and thunderstorms will be extending across the East and Southeast Queensland on Sunday, as the second trough system moves east,” Ms Pagel said.

“Forecast rainfall is substantially lower across Southeast Coast district, because the system will weaken the more it moves east.

“It’s really move inland that will cop the runt of most of that rainfall, but it will still be a wet Saturday and Sunday.

“It will contract even further even further to the Southeast Coast on Monday, but it will be clearing during the day so there’ll be a bit of showers around on Saturday.”

But there is light at the end of the tunnel for people in the South East, with conditions expected to clear by the middle of next week.

“Even today it is quite cloudy conditions. Going into tomorrow we are expecting partly cloudy conditions but there is going to be a lot of cloud cover over the next couple of days.

“It looks to be clearing up by Wednesday next week. We’ve got quite significant thick cloud cover probably well over the weekend, until early next week.

“Just with these couple of trough systems that are moving through, bringing a lot of moisture inland and then that’s spreading across the Southeast Coast.”
