Gold Coast, Brisbane weather: Up to 100mm of rain expected in southeast

Queenslanders are rejoicing after receiving more than 100mm of rain on Tuesday and forecasters say the Gold Coast and Brisbane could see up to another 100mm again today as thunderstorm warnings continue through to the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology yesterday said the Gold Coast and Brisbane could see up to 100mm and 80mm of rainfall today as thunderstorm warnings continue through to the weekend.

It comes as Mt Elliott and Coops Corner, near Bundaberg, received 140mm and 128mm respectively.

Bundaberg mother-of-four Maranda Clark said she was overjoyed at the rain, with her 16-month-old seeing the first significant falls in his life.

“I’ve been hand feeding horses for a solid two-and-a-half years here and it’s absolutely fantastic to see this rain,” she said. “My youngest son, who is just 16 months old – its the first lot of rain he’s actually really seen.”

BOM yesterday reduced its warning after a coastal trough that was forming off the Sunshine Coast that was predicted to dump as much as 150mm, did not move as quickly as initially forecast. The Lockyer Valley is predicted to see up to 30mm today.

A spokesman for NRMA Insurance and CGU Insurance said their Major Events Team would monitor rainfall and will be on standby.

Boat insurer Club Marine yesterday sent alerts to clients to move boats away from power lines and shift trailers from potential flood waters.

An RACQ spokeswoman said they increase staff to handle claims if a severe weather event eventuates.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen but with any weather event we make sure we have enough resources to be able to cope with it if we get an influx of claims,” she said.
