Three fire crews arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. No one was injured but the house sustained significant damage.
Earlier, up to 20,000 properties lost power, while the outages also affected a number of train services across the region.
Trains on the Sunshine Coast line were earlier suspended in both directions between Caboolture and Glass House Mountains stations due to a signalling issue caused by storm activity, while the Ipswich line was also suspended between Redbank and Ipswich stations due to an earlier signalling issue. All lines have since reopened.
Heavy rain also impacted the region’s roads, with traffic on the Gateway Motorway northbound affected.
Delays were also reported on the Riverside Expressway, Pacific Motorway and Coronation Drive between Woolloongabba and Toowong.
At one point, more than 20,000 homes were without power across the southeast during the storm’s peak. More than 5400 were still without power late on Monday night.
A spokesman from Energex says the main causes of the outages were lighting and wind. “Since about 1pm we’ve recorded around 40,000 lightning strikes with 11,000 hitting the ground,” he said.
