South East Queensland was jolted by more than 300,000 lightning strikes as storm season opened with a bang this week.
And there could be more thunderstorm action this week, although the light show is not predicted to be quite as spectacular.
Storms that rolled in from the west on Thursday and Friday lit up the sky, dumped 6cm hailstones and up to 62mm of rain and whipped up winds close to 100km/h.
An Energex spokesman said the southeast was hit by 312,000 lightning strikes over the two days, with the Gold Coast recording almost 30,000.
The region’s residents woke to sunny skies and warm temperatures yesterday, and it is forecast to get even hotter over the next couple of days.
Weather bureau forecaster Pieter Claassen said Brisbane was heading for a top of 30C on Sunday, rising to 33C on Monday, about 6C above the October average.
Ipswich’s maximum is forecast to hit a sweltering 35C tomorrow.
Mr Claassen said a cooler southerly change was expected on Tuesday, and another trough system mid to late week would bring showers and potentially storms.
“It doesn’t look like it will be as active or severe as this last trough was,” he said.
