Brisbane weather: High winds, low apparent temperatures for southeast

Winds up to 80km/h will blast southeast Queensland this weekend, and the chill factor will make it clear winter’s not done yet.

A windy week will culminate in a westerly tempest today, with 80km/h winds set to blow chills through southeast Queensland.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting gusts could batter parts of the region, bringing fire warnings and lowering apparent temperatures by several degrees.

Here's what you can expect with today's Brisbane weather

“We’ve had quite a few windy days in a row, but we’re expecting (Saturday) to be… much windier,” forecaster Kimba Wong said.

Gusts averaging 35km/h to 50km/h were expected for most of the south and southeast.

“We could have wind gusts quite a lot stronger than that – of the order of 70 to 80km/h, particularly about the more exposed parts,” Ms Wong said.

With those winds comes an increased fire risk, with the bureau upgrading fire danger ratings from high to very high for the Southeast Coast, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Wide Bay and Burnett for today.

Apparent temperatures would also be several degrees colder than actual temperatures, Ms Wong said.

“It’s going to be a little bit cooler than it has been in recent days anyway, but that wind is going to add quite a strong wind chill factor as well,” she said.

But neither the winds nor the chills would deter Duchesne college resident Sarah Purcell from her plans to escape campus with a day trip to Mooloolaba.

“We’ll have a check of the weather and see which day looks better”.

“The wind might be a bit much, but we’ll give it a go.”

The bureau expects ease slightly tomorrow before gradually subsiding throughout next week.
