Brisbane weather: Cool change ahead of hot weekend

South East Queensland will enjoy below-average February temperatures this week before summer returns for one last gasp.

Weather To Watch

Wild weather has made for perfect surfing conditions off Queensland’s coast, but meteorologists say it won’t be long before traditional summer sunshine returns.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Claassen said the wild weather causing big surf was caused by strong ridge up the Queensland coast combining with an ex-tropical cyclone that was moving across the east.

“We have an upper trough coming across South East Queensland which will cause widespread showers throughout the week,” Mr Claassen said.

“As the trough starts to weaken we will see conditions ease coming into the weekend.”

The weather made for tough conditions at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, with surfers flocking there at the weekend.

Due to cloud cover and widespread rain the mercury will dip to 27C for coastal areas and 28C for metropolitan areas, several degrees below the February average temperature.

“As the ridge weakens conditions will ease and temperatures will rise, with sunshine forecasted to return on Friday,” Mr Claassen said.

Brisbane’s western suburbs are predicted to jump back up to 35C on Friday.
