Slow, intense storms drenched South East Queensland on Thursday night, with one Brisbane suburb recording more than 70mm within one hour.

Meanwhile, after receiving more than 100mm of rain last night, the North Pine dam got close to max capacity and was opened today to release water, which will flow downstream towards Strathpine and Sandgate.

Sadly, a 44-year-old woman from Geebung was later found deceased in the vehicle.

The driver of the car, a 52-year-old Geebung man, was able to get out of the car and was taken to Prince Charles Hospital in a stable condition.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Ricus Lombard said most places from Albany Creek to Deception Bay had 100mm totals last night.

“We had a pretty decent storm from as early as 6pm,” Mr Lombard said.

“It got stronger as it moved over the northern suburbs.”

“The first one moved off into the bay and the second one came in from the north west which moved pretty slowly and was stationary into the city towards Brisbane”.

The northern suburbs of Brisbane the Moreton Bay district copped the worst of it, receiving some of the highest totals.

The highest total was a whopping 114mm at Deception Bay.

Meanwhile Dayboro recorded 111mm and Albany Creek had 71mm of rainfall within an hour.

“A lot of it fell in over a very short period of time, saturating areas and causing flash flooding,” Mr Lombard said.

“Most storms eased at about 11pm”.

The trough which caused the activity is now moving offshore which should see conditions ease in and around Brisbane.

Light showers are expected this morning but even the slightest bit of rainfall could see already saturated areas flood again.

Although a clearing trend is predicted for South East Queensland and further inland, there is still storm activity predicted further north.

“The Sunshine Coast is still at risk of more storms all the way up to Wide Bay and the Capricornia coast”.
