People in some southern parts of Queensland are waking to another big chill this morning, with ‘feels like’ temperatures dropping below 0C.
Oakey was a frosty 2.4C at 5.30am, with the apparent temperature even colder at -1.4C. Also on the Darling Downs, the temperature had dropped to .6 at Warwick an hour later, with an apparent temperature of -1.5C.
The temperature has dropped below double digits in parts of Brisbane, including the airport, where it was a frosty 9.6C at 6.20am, but felt four degrees cooler.
Further west of the city, it was 7.5C (feels like 5.3C) at Archerfield and an even colder 4.6C (1.9C) at Amberley.
Bureau of Meteorology observations show temperatures of 4C at Canungra and 5.2C at Greenbank.
On the coasts, it was 10.6C at the Gold Coast Seaway, and 11.5C at the Sunshine Coast airport early this morning.
The temperature in Brisbane is set to rise to 21 on Sunday, with sunny conditions, with cool mornings expected for most of the week.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said a strong high pressure was bringing the chill into the state, but the “peak of the coldness” was yet to come.
“The previous night was cold, a weak trough system reinforced that cool air and it will be even colder Monday morning,” he said.
“That’s probably the peak of the coldness particularly in the southeast inland.”
He said the days would be fine and sunny with chilly mornings through to Wednesday.
“For the southeast Monday is going to be cold and when you go into Tuesday it’s still on the cooler side but not as cold.”
“The coldest conditions will be further west in the Darling Downs and Maranoa Warrego on Wednesday.”
Mr Hanniffy said it was the coldest day in May so far, and likely the coldest of the year for the southeast region.
