A massive weather system that has triggered severe storms and dumped torrential rain on South East Queensland is set for a second coming early next week.
Rainfall totals in excess of 100mm have been recorded in many parts of the state’s south over the past week, while Georgetown in Far North Queensland received 142mm overnight, the location’s highest total since March 2018.
While rain is set to ease across South East Queensland over the next three days, the Bureau of Meteorology’s Felim Hanniffy said the trough behind the recent wet weather could swing back eastwards from Tuesday.
It is forecast to bring potential storm activity and more heavy rain.
“Next week, the watch point will be that trough that’s further west, it’s going to come east again, as we go through later on Monday during Tuesday, so Tuesday will be the watch day,” he said.
“That trough would likely bring a lot more cloud, rain areas, shower and storm activity, and could bring the risk of some severe storms as well across parts of the southeast.

“So, Tuesday will likely be cloudy, probably some quite wet conditions as well, as that trough moves through.”
On Thursday Mr Hanniffy said there may be some shower activity in the southeast, mainly in the morning, with a “brighter” afternoon than the region had seen in previous days.
“There’ll be similar conditions for the weekend with showers here and there, but there’ll be a general improvement,” he said.
