A Logan man has proposed to his partner in the most unlikely of places – the local Bunnings.
Jeff Dykstra had planned the proposal to partner, Melanie Burwell, with a Bunnings store in Bethania, Queensland two months prior.
Over the weekend the plan was put in place, with Ms Burwell’s daughter getting in on the surprise.
Ms Burwell said she thought she was meeting her daughter for a coffee in the Bunning store when an announcement came over the PA system.
“Attention shoppers … is there a Melanie Burwell in the store?” the announcement began.
“If so, Jeff would like to know if you’ll marry him.”
Melanie Burwell told Channel 7’s Sunrise on Tuesday she was too busy ordering Mr Dykstra a coffee when he started shushing her saying “Listen, listen”.
“I heard my name, and it was like, ’Oh no!’ I had not expected it. It was just such a surprise,” Ms Burwell told Sunrise.
A video of the surprise engagement showed Mr Dykstra getting down on one bent knee and presenting her with a ring.
Nearby customers were seen smiling and one lady behind the couple looked shocked as the proposal unfolded.
Ms Burwell said she was a regular shopper at Bunnings, making it the perfect place for Mr Dykstra to propose.
“It is such a typical thing for us because I am there at Bunnings every week,” Ms Burwell said.
“He was doing it just right for me. It was so thought out and thoughtful I was just shocked.”
Asked why he loved Ms Burwell so much, Mr Dykstra told Sunrise they were “two peas in a pod”.
“We often say the same thing at the same time. That’s why I knew she’d say yes,” he said.
Bunnings regional manager Ben Oram said the team were thrilled to be a part of the engagement.
“We wish them the very best and look forward to welcoming the happy couple back in store soon,” Mr Oram said.
While wedding plans were on the way, the couple said their ceremony would not be at a Bunnings store but sausages at the reception were definitely on the table.
