Warwick mates start L & B Horse Rescue and Rehoming, dedicated to save sick and abused horses

Two Warwick women have made it their mission to rescue sick and neglected horses from across the Australia, and with hard-work, fundraising and help from a blind horse they’re making an impact. Read their inspiring story.

It’s been a big year for Brittany Dugdale and Layla Wolfenden, with the pair starting one of the most important equine services in the Southern Downs - and at the beginning of the year, they didn’t even know each other.

Warwick was inspired of the story of the two women and their first horse, Tigger, a sickly and underweight horse that inspired the pair to start their organisation.

Now Tigger, fully healthy and recovered, has a new owner, and L & B Horse Rescue and Rehoming has proven to be a successful initiative.

Boasting nine horses in their care at the Rosenthal Heights property, L & B Horses was starting to attract national and international attention.

Founder Brittany Dugdale said it's been a hectic time at L & B Horses, with non-stop calls and messages asking for their services.

“The way some of these horses are treated is so disgusting, I’ve seen my own horse deteriorate because of droughts, it can make us all cry when some of these horses come (to us),” Ms Dugdale said.

“There’s beautiful lush green grass everywhere, some of these horses are treated so badly and it can depress us sometimes.”

The pair even have a blind horse named Flicka that they keep on the property and care for. While it can be tough sometimes to see the horses in poor condition, it doesn’t get the girls down for long.

“It can be hard sometimes, but it’s good to watch (the horses) put weight back on and get them nice and healthy again,” Ms Dugdale said.

“There’s been a fair bit of interest, even from overseas, so we set up a dedicated bank account and ABN for the business, and donations keep it running.”

The pair were aiming to find a bigger property in 2023 to cater to the large number of horses needing rescue.

“We’re very proud of what we do, we love helping these animals,” Ms Dugdale said.

You can visit L & B Horses on Facebook to see the horses’ journeys, and donate via the bank details on the page.
