Warwick dad breached DVO 15 times in two weeks during ‘constant’ harassment campaign

A Warwick dad has been slammed by a magistrate after he breached a domestic violence order against him 15 times in a two-week period. WARNING: DISTURBING

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A Warwick father has been slammed by a magistrate after details of his “creepy” domestic violence breaches came to light.

The father of one – who cannot be named for legal reasons – faced Warwick Magistrates Court on November 6, where he pleaded guilty to 15 contraventions of a domestic violence order over a period lasting from August 17 to September 12, 2023.

The court was told the 40-year-old man was in a relationship with a woman, with the couple sharing a child together, before a “traumatic” tragedy split the pair up.

The man quickly began “pushing the boundaries” of the domestic violence order against him after it was served to him on August 15 of this year, with the court told he breached it almost immediately on August 17.

The man texted the woman, with the woman bluntly replying not to contact her unless it was a certain stipulation regarding the child.

On August 24, the man continued messaging the woman, asking her if she “had random people at her house” and sending selfies.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess noted the woman felt “intimidated and harassed” by the man, who then began to question where the woman was going, as well as sending photos of himself and screenshots.

The court heard the Warwick father breached a DVO against him 15 times in a matter of weeks through constant “creepy” messages.
The court heard the Warwick father breached a DVO against him 15 times in a matter of weeks through constant “creepy” messages.

Disturbing messages sent throughout the order included “I’ll see you in the morning” and “keep your doors locked”.

The man also wrote to her with a picture of a shirt, saying “no need for anything, you’re welcome”.

After almost each breach, the woman told the man not to contact her, or reminded him he was breaching the order.

On September 9, the man began talking about the woman’s personal life saying: “Who’s your new boyfriend? You had some bloke take you on a horse”.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess quickly called the man’s actions as “creepy, intrusive and emotionally manipulative behaviour”.

“You have no insight at all, and ignored the order and repeatedly contacted (the woman) after she warned you multiple times,” Ms Sturgess said.

“It’s none of your business, it doesn’t matter if there’s no threats or abuse, it’s abusive behaviour in itself to contact her when it’s not wanted.”

Ms Sturgess said there was “no excuses” that warranted the man’s repeated breaches and said it was alarming there were so many breaches in such a short period after the order was created.

“There’s no mixed signals here. You knew she didn’t want you to keep messaging her, you were given warning. You’ve shown no respect to her and her wishes,” Ms Sturgess said.

“You could not stick to the rules – you have no insight, and no respect and that troubles me because you have a long time left on that order.”

The man was sentenced to a 12 month probation order, and no conviction was recorded.
