Jason Julian Williams Sawyers pleads guilty in Warwick Magistrates Court to using a cellular service to menace or harass

A man’s vile phone calls have been exposed after the woman he was harassing recognised his voice and went to police.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A disturbing man’s ‘calls for help’ have been exposed in court after his offending came to light.

Jason Julian Williams Sawyers, of Warwick but originally from New Zealand, pleaded guilty to ten charges on October 18 in Warwick Magistrates Court including using a cellular service to menace or harass, driving without a licence and with drugs in his system, and six counts of breaching a domestic violence order.

The court was told the man rang a woman, who had a no contact order in place relating to a DVO against the man, multiple times on February 15 2022, from a private number.

When she finally answered, the court was told Sawyers called her a ‘f--king dog’ – after which she immediately recognised his voice.

Defence lawyer Phil Crook told the court the 50-year-old came to Australia at 21, and had been working since then across the country including with mining firm BHP.

It was noted the man was not currently working, as a result of an incident in which acid went into his eyes, and he was currently on Newstart allowance.

Mr Crook said his client was ringing the woman for “support regarding his mental health issues”.

“Pretty strange way to get help, that sounds like the last person you should be calling, it’s a high level of selfishness,” magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the man.

“Your ‘needs’ cannot overcome the order- it’s not justified,” Ms Sturgess told the man.

“Ringing (the woman) up and calling her a ‘f--king dog’ is not a good way to ask for help. Think about what will serve your interests and address that.”

In unrelated offending, but also before the court, the man was also stopped by police on November 9, 2022 on the Burnett Highway at Jambin, where he was found driving without a licence and with cannabis and meth in his system.

When given a notice to appear from officers, he failed to appear and identify himself.

The magistrate handed him a three month suspension for the driving offences, and gave the man a $500 good behaviour order for 12 months, for the carriage service offence. Convictions were recorded.

For contravening the identifying particulars order, he was convicted and not further punished.

Sawyers was sentenced to 12 months’ probation for the contravention of a DVO, with convictions recorded for all matters.
