Stanthorpe’s Charlotte Caslick honoured with women’s rugby 7s cup as the sport heats up in town

Women’s Rugby Sevens is heating up in Warwick following a legend of the game being honoured by the rugby community. Meet the 14 players from Warwick who will become future legends

Charlotte Caslick been labelled the ‘fastest woman in the rugby world’ and has three international gold medals under her belt, but now one of rugby’s pre-eminent guns has been honoured by the rugby community.

Ahead of the rugby sevens seasons, Queensland Rugby have announced the Charlotte Caslick Cup which will see metropolitan and regional women’s 7 teams compete in the tournament.

More than half of Australia’s representative rugby women’s sevens are from Queensland, it’s hoped that the cup will inspire the next generation of talent from the Sunshine State to go on to play the sport.

Warwick has been a hotbed of rugby talent, especially at the school level, and Assumption College are debuting a Rugby Sevens team at this months South West Sevens competition.

With women's rugby picking up traction in the region, Assumption College sport coordinator and co-coach of rugby Tom Duggan said the under-15 girls side are ready to meet the challenge at their tournament debut.

Coached by Duggan and TRL Gatton Hawk champion Natalia Webb, the Assumption side will have a great chance to show their skill at the competition.

“The girls are red-hot keen and it’s another great opportunity for them to play a bit of sport, it’ll be a great opportunity for some practice and I’m sure they’ll give it their all,” Duggan said.

“We’re definitely looking at giving the girls more opportunities in the future, the girls are lucky, Natalia Webb has won an A Grade premiership for Gatton in the TRL and has a lot of experience.”

Warwick will be represented by Assumption College at the South West Sevens competition, here’s who to look out for from the coaching staff:

Ember Barnsdale

Age: 15

Position: Prop forward

Experience: Ember has played many seasons of League Tag and has also played some rugby league 9s. Ember is keen to test herself with rugby 7s. Her strong leg drive when running the footy is something that will test the opposition.

Isabelle Beer

Age: 15

Position: Centre/forward

Experience: Issy brings her rugby league experience to the squad. She will most likely be used in the backs but is not afraid to be used as a forward if needed. Her versatility and toughness will be an asset to the squad.

Lily Bennet

Age: 15

Position: Fly half/centre

Experience: Lily has played many seasons of League Tag and has also played some Rugby League 9’s. Lily has been involved in Rugby League development programs and is keen to further develop these transferable skills on the Rugby Field.

Rachel Brassel

Age: 15

Position: Scrumhalf/fly half

Experience: Rachel has experience playing Rugby League and League tag. Rachel is a very skilful player and she will offer a lot of spark in the halves.

Kirra-Lee Curtis

Age: 14

Position: Prop forward

Experience: Kirra- Lee has had experience playing a variety of sports including Rugby League. Kirra-Lee is a very tough player and will be a strength in our forward pack.

Katelyn Fischer

Age: 15

Position: Centre

Experience: Katelyn has experience playing Rugby League 9’s and League tag. Katelyn will be a strike weapon in the centres with plenty of speed to burn.

Abigail Hammond

Age: 15

Position: Hooker

Experience: Abi is our most experienced player in the squad. Abi has played in many Rugby 7’s and Rugby Union carnivals and will be a player that our inexperienced players look to for guidance. Abi will captain the side.

Ava McLucas

Age: 15

Position: Prop forward

Experience: Although Ava has not had much experience outside of school, Ava has played rugby league 9’s for the school previously and is looking forward to the challenge of playing rugby 7’s. Her work ethic through the middle will be a strength among the squad.

Hally Mutch

Age: 14

Position: Wing

Experience: Hally brings league tag and rugby league 9s experience to the squad. Hally will offer reliability and plenty of speed out wide.

Morgan O’Leary

Age: 15

Position: Fullback/centre

Experience: Morgan adds a lot of speed to our team which will be something that we look to use against the opposition. Her genuine speed has shown to be too much for oppositions to handle in the past.

Montanna Osborne

Age: 15

Position: Wing

Experience: Despite Montanna lacking much experience, she is a genuine competitor and will never let her teammates down. She is looking forward to this new challenge.

Caitlyn Rhodes

Age: 14

Position: Centre

Experience: Caitlin has had some experience playing League Tag and rugby league 9s in the past. She offers a lot of stability with her textbook defence and will often poke her nose through the opposition defence with ball in hand.

Suzie Spiller

Age: 14

Position: Fullback/flyhalf

Experience: Suzie is our youngest player in the squad but she brings plenty of enthusiasm and is a very valuable player in our squad.

Lauren Trotman

Age: 14

Position: Fullback/centre

Experience: Lauren brings her experience playing League Tag and rugby league 9s to the squad. She is a very versatile player that can slot into fullback or anywhere else in the backline.
