State championship winning rider wins Warwick sports award

PERFORMANCES in three sports secured the junior sports star of the year award

SPORTS AWARDS: Top performances in three sports has secured the 26th annual Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Year award for Allora athlete Kira Holmes.

Holmes received the $500 winner's cheque from Warwick Credit Union at Monday night's awards dinner at the Hawker Rd Function Centre which was attended by a crowd of 180.

She won the Queensland Pony Club Campdraft State Championship at Maryborough and was third in the state in both the stockman's challenge and formal gymkhana.

Holmes was first in zone 4 pony club campdraft.

A wicketkeeper, the Scots PGC College student played in the under-15 National Cricket Championships in Adelaide last year where her top score was 42 for the Queensland team which finished fourth.

Holmes played in the under-18 rookie challenge and was selected last year to represent Queensland in this season's under-18 championships.

She kept wickets for the Queensland Fire team which won two games and lost one against Auckland Hearts in practice games in Brisbane at the start of this season. She also had a win and loss for the Fire in friendly games against the United States.

The Allora sportswoman is wicketkeeper for the Ipswich/Logan team in the Queensland premier cricket competition and had six catches, five stumpings and two assisted run outs in the first half of the current season.

In athletics, she had three firsts in field events at the Warwick All School Sports, gold, silver and bronze at regional level before coming sixth in discus, ninth in javelin and 12th in shot put at the state championships. During the 2018 year, she set a new record in discus at the Queensland Combined Independent Schools Carnival.

Gilmore wins second award

William Gilmore has won the Doc Bodimeade Memorial Encouragement award after an outstanding year in rugby and athletics.

He played for the Queensland Blue under-15 rugby school team in the nationals after being Darling Downs Player of the Carnival in the state championships.

Gilmore was in the Darling Downs under-16 club team which played in the state championships at Albany Creek.

In athletics, he was 15 years age champion at Warwick All Schools and won gold in discus and hammer at the Darling Downs championships.

He was second in hammer and fourth in discus at the state championships and fourth in hammer at the nationals.
