Former Scots PGC student and Young Matilda star Zara Kruger signs for Sydney FC

The Rose City’s own Young Matilda has made waves in the nation's premier women's football division, signing for the current champions, and the whole community is behind her.

Australia must ‘look after’ grassroots football

A young Warwick soccer star is going from strength to strength in her career, with a massive move to the champions of Australia signed, sealed and delivered.

Zara Kruger, of Scots PGC at Warwick, has transferred to 2022-23 champions Sydney FC, from the Brisbane Roar which she only signed to at the beginning of the year.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder made 10 league appearances with the Brisbane side, and was named a Young Matilda making an impact in the under-20 Pacific Women’s Four Nations Tournament, winning the competition.

Kruger, a student at Scots PGC in Warwick, previously played in the Darling Downs representative side, West Wanderers in Toowoomba and the Queensland Schoolgirls team.

Kruger told Warwick Daily News earlier in the year she first played football in Warwick with the under-7, and is always trying to improve at the beautiful game.

“It’s a great environment to play in, I like the intensity and there’s a lot more training, but it’s been something I’ve been working towards since I was young,” Kruger said in January.

“It’s been crazy, I got the call up to the Young Matildas camp which I’m really excited about, playing with the Matildas would be a bit of a dream.”

Zara’s school Scots PGC celebrated the news on Facebook posting the move is a “huge step for Zara and testament to the hard work and commitment she’s invested in her playing career”.

“We are super proud of you Zara!” the post read.

The Australasian Soccer Academy also gave the young attacker some well-wishes, saying it was “fantastic to see the talent and hard work of Warwick junior, Zara, being recognised and rewarded with this exciting opportunity”.

“We couldn’t be prouder of her achievements so far, and we have no doubt that she has an incredibly bright future ahead of her,” the statement read.

“Zara has made an excellent choice, and we’re confident that she’ll thrive in this new environment. Here’s to an amazing future with Sydney FC.”

Kruger’s move to the Australian 2022-23 champions will be joined by American striker Shea Connors, who at 27 years of age was last year’s Brisbane Roar player of the year and won the Golden Boot last season.

Zara’s first season with the Sydney side kicks off on October 14, against derby rivals Western Sydney Wanderers.
