BOXING: A boxer who wants to eventually make it to the Olympics will receive a helping hand on January 31 when the Rose City Boxing Club and Premier Darts Association of Warwick hold a fund-raising darts afternoon.
Britnee Wallace will be one of the school leaders at Assumption College this year and is in the Queensland boxing team to compete in the nationals in Melbourne in February.
She won a national junior title last year in Perth and is up to the Youth Australian Titles this year.
Wallace has a record of six wins/six losses and is upbeat about her chances in Melbourne.
"I want to win a national youth title; my ultimate goal is to represent Australia at the Olympics."
Women's boxing was introduced at the 2012 Olympics.
Damien Lawler represented Australia as a boxer and will be in Wallace's corner in Melbourne.
"She is in excellent form and her fitness is peaking at the right time," Lawler said.
"Britnee's dedication to the sport is unbelievable. Her best punch is her straight left but her right hand is not far behind."
Wallace takes in every word from her trainer.
"Damien tells me to box smart and keep up my movements around the ring," she said.
Both Lawler and Premier Darts Association of Warwick president Richard Bakon are upbeat about the way two sports are joining together for the fund-raiser.
"We have no specific money target, we just want to help Britnee's trip to Melbourne as much as we can," Lawler said.
"It is good for two sports to come together for the fund-raiser.
"I have played darts for both the Warwick and Premier associations and I just rang up Richard and asked about the day."
Bakon said prospective players were welcome to call him or just turn up on the day. "It is open to everyone, including social players," he said.
"Everyone will play at least two games, first-round losers will go into B pool. Players will still be able to win overall from B pool."
Club activities
AWAY from the fund-raising day, both clubs are busy at the start of another year.
The Rose City Boxing Club has training each weekday afternoon from 3.30pm at the Warwick Boxing Club gym in preparation for a busy year in the ring.
The club is on the road at least once a fortnight to a tournament somewhere in south-east Queensland.
Premier darts plays three-a-side fixtures each Tuesday from 7pm at the Warwick City Band centre, four-a-side from 7pm each Thursday and then social darts from 11.30am each Saturday. Both clubs welcome new members.
