Comp set to 'Pop'

WARWICK'S first junior inter-school basketball competition is set to start in a few weeks – the only thing missing is the teams.

WARWICK'S first junior inter-school basketball competition is set to start in a few weeks - the only thing missing is the teams.

Warwick Basketball Association's junior development officer 'Pop' Dickerson delivered nomination forms to schools across the Rose City this week.

Dickerson said basketball boasted many benefits for children.

"It is a good sport for kids of this age because it is a low-impact sport," he said.

"Basketball is still a contact sport but it's not a collision sport like rugby.

"It creates hand-eye co-ordination and encompasses skills that are not just used in basketball but in many other sports as well."

Dickerson said a similar competition was run in Toowoomba.

"If they do it in Toowoomba why can't we do it in Warwick?" he asked.

Dickerson said the logistics of the competition depended on the number of applications.

"If we get enough interest from boys and girls we will run separate competitions," he said.

Teams will be split into three groups - Years 4 and 5; Years 6 and 7; and Years 8, 9 and 10.

The Year 4 and 5 students will play first on the Friday of each week from 4.15-5.15pm, Years 6-7s from 5.20-6.20pm and the high school students from 6.30-7.30pm.

The nine-week competition is scheduled to start on July 20 and finish on September 14.

The games will be played at the Warwick High School Gymnasium. It costs $60 for the season or $8 a game.
