REVEALED: Best 11 spots to grab a beer in Warwick

A GOOD old country pub or bar that offers a bargain, Warwick has plenty of watering holes but here are our top picks when you need to quench a thirst.

THERE'S little better than a cold beer on a hot day, or let's face it, a cold beer on a cold day.

Warwick has plenty of watering hotels, a few less than 40 years ago but still everyone has their favourites.

Here are mine:

1: Sandy Creek pub

This is as Southern Downs as it gets. A grand old pub on a quiet country road, with a veranda that's possibly got the best beer-sipping outlook in the region. This spot makes it. The bar is filled with local characters, history and there's always a welcoming face to pour your favourite poison. Great counter meals, a large beer garden perfect for the whole crew. Easily my top pick.

2: The Warwick Hotel

Anyone who's spent any time in the grand old hotels of our capital cities will see the classically restored public bar at the Warwick Hotel for what it is. This bar is unique in Warwick. If you could pick it up and plonk it down on Chapel St in Melbourne, you'd suddenly find yourself paying double for a schooner. A top place for a catch up with mates.

3: The Horse and Jockey

With new, enthusiastic management and a concerted push to quench Warwick's thirst for live music, the HnJ has reaffirmed its position as a Warwick favourite. Make no mistake, this is the Rose City's classic establishment and it's got its own style and character. Pull up a seat at the bar and have a yarn with the regulars, or the workers who call the hotel home for their stay. Take a group and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that generations of Warwick punters have kept going back for.

4: The Stockyard Hotel

This is one pub that you walk into and thousands of eyes will be watching you. Pretty much every person who's ever stopped in the place has their photo on the wall and that in itself is something to see. The bar is huge, more than enough room to swing a dance partner and the beer garden is a little beer-drinking haven. If you're lucky you can catch some awesome live music and laugh the night away with the regulars. Top marks for fun.

5: The Criterion

As far as Warwick pubs go they don't get much more classic than the Cri. The Three Bullet Bar reeks of history and is a great looking public bar. Pool, jukebox and sport on the telly. How can you go wrong?

6: The Hawker Road Function Centre

Great setting on the golf course and a view over the city is hard to beat. An expansive deck overlooking the wildlife is made for large gathering or maybe even just a quiet spot to lament a crappy round.

7: The RSL

If you're not a member, you should be. Cheaper beers for a start and you could get lucky with a members' draw win. The best spot in town for live music and the people pack in on the weekends making for a fun night spent in good spirits.

8: The Sovereign Hotel

Another one of the last classic Warwick pubs. A small, intimate bar means your conversation is open to all and there lies the charm of the Sov. Long gone are the days where you might have been served in school uniform but the quiet corner bar is still a magnet for Warwick's characters. The newly developed beer garden and barbecue area is the perfect spot for a Sunday session.

9: The Condy Sports Club

Great food, plenty of space for a family night out and all the sport your eyes can drink in. A huge support of Warwick's sporting clubs, this place deserves your patronage.

10: The Malt House

A newcomer to the Rose City's beer scene, but they certainly have opened with a bang. The discerning beer drinker might find something to suit their cultured palate here, with some craft drops to suit. The rooftop bar has proved a huge hit for weekend crowds over the warmer months. If a DJ is your thing then this might just be the place for you.

11: Your place

You can't go wrong. The beers are cheap, the couch is familiar and the tunes are the ones you want to hear every time. Don't want to get dressed? You can drink in your undies at your place. Just warn your guests first. Cheers.
