NAPLAN data showing students falling behind 'not news to teachers'

Warwick’s top-performing schools have emerged as the state’s 2021 NAPLAN test results are finally revealed, making it the first time in two years the full results have been released.

Schools across Queensland have reportedly shown massive improvements in both literacy and numeracy, with the state also recording its best-ever results for Year 3 writing in 2021.

Scots PGC College came out on top in Warwick with the highest combined result across primary and secondary grades, ranking as the northern region’s top primary school and second-highest for Years 7 and 9.

Principal Kyle Thompson said his school community tried to treat NAPLAN as any other day, but credited the dedication to learning from both students and teachers through a tough period for education with the 2021 cohort’s success.

“We prepare our students for these tests through high-quality teaching and learning programs that continually strive to enhance the literacy and numeracy skills of our students,” he said.

“Students are provided with opportunities to familiarise themselves with the style of questions that may be asked and the test format they may be presented with.

“As well as our excellent results, we are mindful that students are more than just numbers and leagues tables – our education program is made up of academic, social, emotional, pastoral care and a broad co-curricular program that also enhances the holistic and academic development of our learners.”

The remaining top five Warwick high school rankings were rounded out by Assumption College, the School of Total Education, Killarney P-10 State School, and Warwick State High School.

St Joseph’s School in Stanthorpe ranked top in the Southern Downs region across all categories including reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and numeracy.

Following Scots PGC College in Warwick’s primary school rankings was Killarney P-10 State School, Warwick West State School, St Mary’s Primary School, and SOTE.

Reading was consistently the highest-scoring category for Warwick primary schools, while numeracy and spelling were the two with the lowest scores.

Education Minister Grace Grace announced with the release of the results on Wednesday that students would sit their tests in Term 1 instead of Term 2 from next year.

“Moving the test forward means that valuable dataset will be available earlier in the year to inform teaching and learning programs and to give parents information about their child’s performance earlier in the year,” Ms Grace said.
