A Warwick woman who aggressively lashed out at her mother on two occasions after she was denied money for fast food and cigarettes has landed in court for breaching a domestic violence order.

The Warwick Magistrates Court heard the 20-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was celebrating her birthday at home when she asked her mum for $10 to buy KFC.

Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa said an argument broke out when her mother refused to lend the cash, which escalated to the woman shoving her mother and hitting her on the arm.

Sergeant de Lissa said the Warwick woman also pushed her brother out of the way to get to her mother, with both acts breaching a domestic violence order.

“(She) said she was frustrated with (her mother) as she didn’t give her any birthday presents, and she lost her temper and lashed out,” he said.

It was only weeks later a similar conflict broke out between the woman and her mother after the 20-year-old was refused money for cigarettes.

Sergeant de Lissa said the woman lost her temper and picked up a TV remote that she snapped in her hands, then slammed and punched several doors as she stormed through the house.

Duty lawyer Clare Hine told the court the woman’s outbursts were exacerbated by several mental health concerns such as schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, and anxiety.

“Previous to this she’d been quite a well-functioning young woman and at one point held three jobs, but was involved in a car crash and her dad died last year and her mental health deteriorated from then on,” she said.

“She has since become quite dependent on her mum, but they have a little bit of a toxic relationship.”

Acting magistrate Gary Finger warned the woman the aggressive outbursts were “no way to behave” and she “ought to respect her mother” more in the future.

The woman pleaded guilty to two counts of contravening a domestic violence order.

She was fined $1000 and no conviction was recorded.
