New details have revealed the full extent of a student’s shocking attack on a classmate at a Warwick high school.
The incident sent the entire campus into lockdown and the offender fled the school grounds on foot.
Reports of the attack varied widely across the community, with one Warwick High student claiming to the Daily News there was a baton and a fishing knife involved.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed officers were brought in to deal with the incident and track down the boy responsible, who was aged in his late teens.
“Around 11.45am yesterday a disturbance occurred between two male students at a local high school. One of the boys produced a metal bar and threatened the other boy,” she said.
“A third boy, spotting the disturbance, attempted to intervene during which time he sustained a small cut to his chin from the bar.
“A teacher intervened and took the bar away from the boy, who then ran off.”
She said police eventually caught up with the boy later that afternoon and he was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
The spokeswoman would not confirm the ages of any of the students involved, citing privacy concerns.
Warwick High principal Joy Craig yesterday issued a statement to parents and caregivers seeking to reassure the school community after the dramatic incident.
“I understand there may be some concerns from parents in the school community in relation to this matter and assure you that, as always, we respond to matters in strict accordance with all appropriate policy and procedures,” she said.
“Support services at the school include our guidance officer, wellbeing team, year-level co-ordinators, and year-level deputy principals. If you have any further concerns, please contact one of our team.”
Police also attended an “altercation” at Warwick Christian College within about an hour of the Warwick High incident, but its nature has not yet been confirmed.
It remains unclear whether the two were connected.
