Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A Warwick father who fell off his motorbike while trying to drive home at close to four times the legal alcohol limit was just one of the residents recently sentenced in court for drink or drug driving.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the corner of Dragon and Wood Sts at about 6.30pm on July 23 following reports that a drunk Scott Anthony Woodrow had come off his bike, with the vehicle soon found on a nearby footpath.

Police prosecutor Steve de Lissa told Warwick Magistrates Court that Woodrow recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.189 at the scene.

The self-represented 46-year-old said he spent much of his time working or volunteering at his daughter’s school, and that the long work hours and other responsibilities had “just got to him” that night.

Woodrow claimed he had tried to call a taxi to get home before deciding to drive back himself, but said he had definitely learned his lesson.

“It’s embarrassing, it’s shameful. I feel bad because I let my daughter down,” he said.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the Warwick man that she would likely describe his offending the same way, but commended him for his minimal traffic history and acknowledged that he had already been without a licence since the incident.

Woodrow pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence of liquor.

He was fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for six months.

A young Warwick man has been warned he needs to better value his licence after he was caught drug driving on a busy road.

Stirling Alexander Hector Johnson was nabbed by police on Wallace St on the afternoon of July 9, and tested positive to marijuana in his system.

The 21-year-old said he would need his father to drive him to his full-time job each day, so his punishment would come not just from the court, but from demanding his dad’s time and taking him away from his own employment.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess warned Johnson that while he was able to find a solution on this occasion, he needed to value his licence as he would not always be able to rely on his dad’s patience or willingness to help.

Johnson pleaded guilty to drug driving. He was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for one month.

A Warwick mum was granted the minimum disqualification period after she was nabbed drug driving.

Tamsin Cherie Crank was pulled over on Churchill Dr on June 10, with later testing revealing meth in her system.

The 49-year-old appeared in court with a lengthy criminal history and had only recently completed probation and parole orders at the time of her court proceedings.

Duty lawyer Phillip Crook said the mother of two struggled with mental health concerns such as schizophrenia and depression, and her own mother had recently been diagnosed with cancer, which was a difficult period for her family.

Crank pleaded guilty to one count of drug driving. She was fined $300 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Being busted behind the wheel with drugs in his system twice in just a few weeks cost Adrian Joshua Mathers his licence for three months.

The 49-year-old was first nabbed driving with meth and marijuana in his system on McEvoy St on May 15, and tested positive again to marijuana on June 15.

The Warwick court was told Mathers had several previous drug-related convictions.

Duty lawyer Phillip Crook said his client was using marijuana to treat chronic wrist pain while he awaited surgery and had spoken with his doctor about medicinal access to the drug, but was also struggling stop his meth use.

Mathers pleaded guilty to two counts of drug driving and was fined $600.

A Warwick P-plater has been warned he needs to “wise up” after he was caught drink driving for the second time.

Ethan James Bender was busted behind the wheel with a BAC of 0.046 in the early hours of the morning on July 23.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the 19-year-old he was well above the no-alcohol limit required for provisional licence holders, and should have known better after facing court for the same offence previously.

“Zero means zero. If you have even one drink, you’re going to be over the limit, let alone however many you had to get into 0.046,” she said.

“Why you haven’t learned your lesson on the first occasion is beyond me.

“You’ve got a driver’s licence, a driver’s licence is a privilege, and you’ve got to comply with the requirements of being licensed – and in your case, that means zero alcohol.”

Bender pleaded guilty to one count of drink driving. He was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for three months.

A Warwick man has caught a lucky break when he was granted a work licence after being busted drug driving.

Jayden Varley was caught on the Cunningham Highway at about 11am on May 12, where he tested positive to marijuana in his system.

The 25-year-old told police he had smoked marijuana while having drinks with friends the night before.

Varley told the Warwick court that he was the sole provider for him and his partner, and would struggle to continue providing for them should he lose his licence completely for any period.

The Warwick man pleaded guilty to one count of drug driving.

He was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for two months with the approved work licence.

Craig Phillip Janssen fronted the Warwick court after he was nabbed driving with marijuana in his system.

The 49-year-old was pulled over on Weewondilla Rd on the afternoon of July 8, with later testing confirming the presence of the drug.

Janssen pleaded guilty to one count of drug driving. He was fined $200 and disqualified from driving for one month.
