Investigations are continuing into a horror crash that killed popular high school student Tiarnah Reid, and sent shockwaves through the Warwick community.
Tiarnah was a back seat passenger when the dual cab ute she was travelling in left the road in the early hours of Friday morning and rolled several times.
The Year 11 student tragically died at the scene.
Another 16-year-old girl seated beside Tiarnah suffered serious head injuries and was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.
A hospital spokesman said on Monday the Warwick teen was now in a stable condition and remained in hospital, four days after the tragedy.
Warwick police officer-in-charge Jamie Deacon said while the girl’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, they were still serious.
“Whether there’s any long-term impact to her is not yet known,” he said.
Senior Sergeant Deacon said early investigations suggested a white ute was travelling south on an unsealed section of Mount Tabor Rd around 2.30am before the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the road and roll several times.
The 17-year-old driver and a 16-year-old male passenger were taken to Warwick Hospital after the crash and had since been released.
No charges have been laid in relation to the crash.
Sgt Deacon said it was too early to say whether speed or other issues were a factor, as the investigation by officers from the Forensic Crash Unit was ongoing.
“These matters take time. The investigation is continuing and it might be some time before we know the cause of the crash,” he said.
“It would be inappropriate to comment on specifics at this time.”
Locals took to social media on Friday to share their shock and dismay at the tragic death that has come at a time when many Warwick families are preparing for Christmas festivities.
David Plummer was saddened by the news and praised the Warwick teen.
“Tairnah was such a beautiful young lady. We don’t know why she had to die but we do know that her short life was a tribute to her loving family,” he said.
“We all grieve for you and with you.”
Karen Rolfe said: “I’m so sorry to hear the devastating news of the loss of (this) beautiful girl.
“My heart goes out to her family.”
Ianna Williamson said: “So very tragic. Deepest sympathy to the family.
“Praying you find comfort in the love of your family and friends.
“Our hearts are truly saddened for the loss of your precious girl.”
The death comes amid a tragic spate of road deaths across the state, with more than 240 fatal crashes in Queensland involving 268 deaths this year.
