A Warwick teenager has been charged over a string of burglaries and car thefts committed across the region and wider southeast Queensland as police continue investigating the town’s recent spate of crime.
Police will allege the 15-year-old was one of the people involved in crashing a stolen car on Rosehill Rd in the early hours of Monday morning.
Warwick Police acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Cameron Slater said the teenager and his believed co-offenders fled the scene of the collision on foot, with the boy eventually tracked down and taken into custody.
The Warwick boy has since been connected to a string of alleged break-ins and car thefts across the Warwick, Toowoomba, and Brisbane areas within the past 12 months.
It will be alleged two of these involved breaking into school grounds at Glennie Heights and Oxley State Schools.
The teenager now faces three charges each of entering a dwelling by break with intent to commit an indictable offence, two each of burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one of entering premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He is due to appear in Warwick Children’s Court on April 12.
No one else has been arrested or charged in relation to any of the reported incidents.
The Warwick community fears it could now be facing its second outbreak of burglaries and property-related crime this year, only weeks after an escalating spread of break-ins and car thefts left the entire town on high alert.
It comes as police are now also investigating a stash of drugs uncovered at a Dragon St home earlier this week.
Sergeant Slater said detectives raided a Dragon St home at about 10am on Tuesday and found almost 70g of marijuana in various forms, 15 tablets such as Valium, and less than a gram of a crystal-like powder.
“There were also some implements used in the consumption of drugs like pipes and syringes, a grinder, and scales,” he said.
No charges have been laid at this stage.
