A number of Warwick residents caught red-handed stealing or shoplifting from local businesses have been sentenced in court this week.
A sly workplace theft worth hundreds of dollars earned Tony Wayne Hall a date with the Warwick magistrate.
A witness at the Warwick man’s workplace in Oakey spotted the 40-year-old putting another employee’s welding helmet in the back of his ute on September 4 last year.
Prosecutor Bettina Trenear said Hall used his own tool bag to cover up the helmet, which was worth about $400, and it wasn’t seen again until police raided the father-of-three’s home in March this year.
The court was told the helmet had since been returned to its owner.
Magistrate Roger Stark acknowledged the offending was out of character, but urged him against future opportunistic crime.
Hall pleaded guilty to one count of stealing by clerks and servants.
He was fined $600 and no conviction was recorded.
Shannon Angela Williams fronted Warwick Magistrates Court over a sneaky attempt to pocket cosmetics.
The 21-year-old picked up a Revlon brow pomade worth $15 from the shelf and put it in one of her bags, then shifted it into another shopping bag to hide it from counter staff.
Williams then left the store without paying for the item.
Police identified the woman through CCTV footage after staff at Priceline pharmacy reported the theft later that day.
The self-represented Williams did not offer any justification for her actions to the court when given the opportunity.
She pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorised dealing in shop goods worth $150 or less.
Williams was fined $150.
A probation order didn’t stop Dean Anthony Paul Calleja from pinching an unusual item from Priceline pharmacy.
The Warwick man targeted the store in Rose City Shoppingworld at about 9.45am on July 8, pocketing a tube of eczema cream worth $22.99.
Prosecutor Bettina Trenear said Calleja set off the sensors at the front of the store as he was leaving, but it didn’t stop him making a hasty escape on foot.
Priceline staff reported the theft and Calleja was identified by police via CCTV footage.
Calleja pleaded guilty to unauthorised dealing in shop goods worth less than $150 in a letter submitted to Warwick Magistrates Court.
He was fined $150 and no conviction was recorded.
