A man who armed himself with a knife and spanner and threatened to kill a woman during a heated altercation involving his partner has claimed in the Warwick court that alcohol was to blame for his offending.

Craig Thomas Walker and his partner were at a Leyburn home at about 11.30pm on May 20 when an argument broke out between his girlfriend and another woman, with the dispute spilling out onto the street before being broken up.

Police prosecutor Andrew Grafton told Warwick Magistrates Court that Walker said he was “going to kill one of those f--king c--ts” and went back inside the house to arm himself with a long, thin knife and a shifting spanner.

Sergeant Grafton said the 29-year-old tried to follow the woman who had argued with his partner back across the road, but was blocked by a third woman involved in the conflict.

“(Walker) kept yelling at her to ‘not come back here’ because he had a knife,” he said.

“This kept going on for approximately a 10-minute period, with (Walker) going back and forth and making comments about how he was going to kill them and hurt them.”

Walker was eventually calmed down and handed over the weapons.

Defence lawyer Phillip Crook said the most recent entry on this client’s minor criminal history was nearly 10 years ago, and that this sort of alcohol-fuelled offending was out of character for the father of two.

Mr Crook said Walker had recently sustained injuries in a workplace incident that could prevent him from ever working again, and was experiencing other stressors in his personal life that were only exacerbated by his alcohol consumption that evening.

Walker pleaded guilty to one count of going armed so as to cause fear.

He was fined $350 and no conviction was recorded.
