Corey Michael Hogden, 37, caught with ‘30cm, sharp knife’

A roofer and saleyards worker, previously convicted of stabbing a friend’s pet dog, has returned to court after his latest knife antics raised “a great deal of suspicion”.

Corey Hogden has been sentenced for carrying a knife in a public place.

A roofer who was previously convicted of stabbing a pet dog, has given another bloody reason for carrying a knife in public.

Corey Michael Hogden, 37, was stopped and searched by police at the intersection of Pratten and Douglas Streets, Warwick, on January 29.

Sgt Steve de Lissa told Warwick Magistrates Court on February 19 Hogden produced a knife “30cm in length, with a sharp edge”.

Hogden, who the court heard also worked at Warwick Saleyards, pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of a knife in a public place.

His lawyer, Clare Hine, said the father-of-two had killed a sheep earlier in the day and was cutting it up for dog meat, before drinking a few beers and walking home.

In 2021, Hogden was sentenced for breaking into a family friends' home and stabbing a 17-year-old dog in the back, causing life-threatening injuries to the pet.

At the time, Hodgen was said to be “hearing voices” after using crystal meth the day before and was “fixated” on finding his friend’s dog.

In court this week, Magistrate Virginia Sturgess reminded Hogden the community and police were both rightly concerned about the number of people who carried knives in public and their use.

“You had no reasonable excuse no matter what you say the knife was for in the first place,” Ms Sturgess said.

The magistrate noted Hogden had “serious” offences on his criminal history, with a recent burglary also being a concern.

“I point that out because knives can be used in many ways for many offences, which is why it is a criminal offence,” she explained.

“You simply shouldn’t be carrying a knife around in public.

“There is a very good reason why people shouldn’t be carrying knives around, and somebody with a criminal history like yours is going to arouse a great deal of suspicion carrying knives in public.”

Hogden was fined $600 and a conviction was recorded.

The knife was forfeited.
