THE Courier-Mail journalist Vanessa Marsh has won a prestigious gong at the 2018 Walkley Mid-Year Awards.

Marsh and her News Corp Australia colleague Emma Field from The Weekly Times last night received the Best Industrial Reporting award in Sydney for a series of stories about the deaths of Pacific Islander workers in Australia’s rural sector.

Their reports revealed how 12 Islander workers died while on an Australian Federal Government program in its first five years, amid claims of exploitation and slave-like conditions.

The Courier-Mail was also yesterday named as a finalist in this year’s News Media Awards for the “SOS – Save Our Schoolkids” campaign, which called for the introduction of compulsory swim and water safety lessons in Queensland primary schools.

The winners for these awards will be announced on September 14.
