Plans to demolish parts of the fire-damaged Broadway Hotel in Woolloongabba received a stinging rebuke at Brisbane City Council today, with every councillor voicing their disapproval of the proposal.

COUNCILLORS have landed a stinging blow against plans to demolish parts of the heritage-listed Broadway Hotel, unanimously supporting a symbolic motion against the proposal.

Built in 1889, the Broadway has been ravaged by fire twice in recent years and has sat as a derelict wreck ever since.

Plans for a 27-storey apartment tower were dropped in 2018, however a new application was lodged in March to demolish some original parts of the building, not including the three-storey facade.

In a motion today in council’s chambers that received the unanimous support of all councillors, Gabba Ward councillor Jonathan Sri said the building represented a part of Brisbane’s heritage that was rapidly vanishing and urged it to be rejected.

“This development application is proposing to demolish all of the one and two-storey wings of the hotel site as well as the World War Two air raid shelter at the back of the site,” he said.

“It’s obviously very concerning to myself and a lot of local residents that this development application has even been lodged.”

Deputy Mayor Krista Adams said since the Broadway Hotel was on the state heritage register, the application had been referred to the State Government.

“We hope that the state government will undertake a very thorough assessment of this application to ensure all heritage features of the building are retained,” Cr Adams said.

She said Brisbane City Council had made it clear that demolition of any heritage components of the Broadway were not supported by council.

The motion, put forward by Cr Sri, was supported by Labor, LNP and independent councillors.
