For a heartbreaking minute, hundreds of the Netball Queensland community bowed their heads and remembered one of their own, The Bundaberg News-Mail reports.

Teams of primary school girls locked arms as an announcer thanked everyone for congregating on the netball courts in honour of their loss.

The little girl was one of two people who were tragically killed in a head-on crash 5km south of Childers on Friday afternoon.

The eight-year-old player, one of the club’s senior netball coaches and her 12-year-old granddaughter were travelling north toward Bundaberg when their sedan collided with a northbound ute.

The vehicle was one of several travelling in convoy to the Samsung Primary Schools Cup - a two-day annual school sporting event held in Bundaberg for the first time this weekend.

The sole male occupant of the ute was pronounced dead at the scene, as was the little girl.

The senior coach and her granddaughter were both airlifted to the Sunshine Coast with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

An eight-year-old Gold Coast girl, a member of the Coomera Netball Club, was one of two people killed in the head-on collision on the Bruce Highway near South Isis, southeast of Childers, on Friday afternoon.

In a statement the Coomera Netball Club shared on social media, the committee said it offered its “deepest condolences to the families involved, we cannot even begin to imagine what you might be going through at this very sad time”.

“We as a club need to rally round and help these families through this very rough time right now,” it stated.

“We are asking you to dig deep and make a donation direct deposited into our club bank account, all funds raised will go directly to all families involved.”
