GOLD Coast netball clubs are rallying around a family involved in a heartbreaking fatal car crash south of Bundaberg.

A family was travelling to a school netball event when an eight-year-old girl died in a devastating head on crash on the Bruce Highway near South Isis yesterday afternoon, the Bundaberg News-Mail reports.

A male ute driver also died in the crash.

An 11-year-old girl and her grandmother were injured in the crash.

They were treated by paramedics and flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

An outpouring of grief and support has flowed for those involved on social media, with the Coomera Netball Club offering heartfelt condolences.

“Yesterday 3 members of our club were involved with a fatal car crash in Bundaberg,” the club posted on Facebook.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the families involved, we cannot even begin to imagine what you might be going through at this very sad time.

“A member from our under 8 Avalanche team sadly passed away while travelling to a school netball event, we currently have one of our senior coaches and her granddaughter in hospital with serious injuries, we currently don’t have full details on this at this point.”

The club called on supporters to rally around the families, linking to a bank account in the social media post.

“We as a committee write this post with a very heavy heart,” the post said.

“We as a club need to rally round and help these families through this very rough time right now.

“We are asking you to dig deep and make a donation direct deposited into our club bank account, all funds raised will go directly to all families involved.”

The Runaway Bay Netball Club, Breakers Netball Club and the Phoenix Netball Club have all offered love and sympathy.

“RBNC wishes to put forward our deepest sympathy to the family and to all members of the Coomera Netball Club,” the Runaway Bay Netball Club posted on Facebook.

Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark said the ‘heartbreaking’ tragedy had cast a pall over ‘what would otherwise have been an absolutely wonderful festival’.

Queensland netball star Laura Geitz was also in Bundaberg helping console shattered friends and families.

“There are 800 girls and boys here in Bundaberg and it’s a bit of a sombre time,” Ms Clark said.

“Many people were unaware of the tragedy because they were travelling here and we’ve made them aware of it this morning. We’re wrapping our arms around the families and the communities that have been impacted by this terrible, heartbreaking accident.”

Ms Clark said a tribute to the victims, including a minute’s silence, would be held before play tomorrow and a fundraiser for the affected families was being organised.
